Crochet granny squares in Singapore and ways to use them
A granny square is one of the best known shapes in crochet. If you have seen a patchwork blanket of bright little squares, you have seen granny squares at work. This post explains what a granny square is, shares a few general ideas for using one, and points to the squares you can find on the Granny Square shelf at Sticky Smiley Studio.
What is a granny square?
As a general rule, a granny square is a flat crochet square worked in rounds. It starts in the middle and grows outwards, one round at a time, until it turns into a square. Each round can be a new colour, which is why granny squares often look like a little burst of colour from the centre to the edge.
The name is an old one, and the idea is simple: small squares are easy to carry around and work on, and many of them can later be joined together into something bigger. That mix of small and flexible is a big part of why crochet fans still love them today.
Granny squares on the shop
Every square on the Granny Square shelf is $5.00.
The shop marks a few squares as new. The Cherry Blossom ($5.00) is a granny square in red, blue, pink and white. The Sunshine Pop ($5.00) is in red, yellow and cream, while the Sunny Daisy ($5.00) is yellow and white, like a daisy. If you like softer shades, the Minty Breeze ($5.00) is in mint and white.
Among the squares not marked new, for something bolder, the Midnight Sunflower ($5.00) has a black border and a yellow centre. The Pastel Granny Square ($5.00) is a pastel square in pink, yellow, green and blue.
Simple ways to use a granny square
A granny square does not need to become a whole blanket to be useful. Here are some general ideas that work with a single square or a small handful.
- Display: pin one to a notice board or prop it up on a shelf for a pop of colour.
- Frame it: a plain frame turns a square into a piece of wall art.
- Gift topper: tie one to the top of a present instead of a bow.
- Desk decoration: let a square sit beside your laptop or pencil cup to brighten the space.
- Start a project: if you crochet, a few squares can be the beginning of a bag, a cushion cover or a blanket.
These are general crochet ideas rather than promises about any one square, so pick the use that suits you.
Granny squares as gifts
A colourful square can make a thoughtful little gift on its own. Pick one from the shelf whose colours suit the friend you have in mind. If you would like to give more than one, you can pick a few that look nice side by side, such as the Blue Sky Bloom square next to the Pink Petal Garden square.
The Blue Sky Bloom ($5.00) is in red, white and light blue, and the Pink Petal Garden ($5.00) is in pink and yellow with a green border.
If you want to pair a square with another crochet piece, the Crochet Keychain shelf and the Crochet Bag & Pouch shelf are good places to look. For example, the Daisy Drawstring Pouch ($8.00) is a blue crochet drawstring pouch with a yellow daisy.
A little care goes a long way
As a general tip, keep crochet away from strong sunlight for long periods so the colours stay bright, and handle it gently. For more on this, see the post on care for crochet items.
