Before you wash
Wash a piece when it looks dusty or has a mark, not on a fixed schedule. A keychain that is handled every day, such as the Mini Sunflower Bouquet Keychain ($5.00), needs a look more often than a granny square that stays indoors. A light shake is often enough between washes.

How to wash crochet
A general way to wash crochet is by hand, in cool water, with a small amount of mild soap. Skip hot water, the washing machine, bleach, and fabric softener.
- Fill a clean basin with cool water and mix in a little mild liquid soap.
- Press the piece under the water so the suds move through the stitches. Keep the soak short.
- Support a larger piece while it is wet. The Pink Pom-Pom Blanket and the Purple Pom-Pom Blanket are each $35.00. Wet weight can pull a round shape and a pom-pom edge if the blanket hangs from one side.
- Rinse in cool water until the water looks clear. Soap left in the stitches can feel stiff once it dries.
- Press the water out with your hands. Do not wring, twist, or rub. Wringing stretches the fabric.
- Roll the piece in a clean towel and press. That lifts water without pulling the stitches.
How to clean a crochet keychain
Clean a crochet keychain with the same gentle wash, in a smaller bowl. Dry the bell as well as the crochet so water does not sit in it. If a piece has a ring or a clasp, dry that part too. Do not tug the stitch the keychain hangs from while it is wet.
Lay it flat to dry in the shade
Lay the piece flat on a clean towel, out of direct sun. Shade helps the colour stay even. While it is still damp, pat it back into shape. Pat a granny square such as Sunny Daisy ($5.00) so the sides stay square. Pat a flower coaster such as Pink Flora ($5.00) so the puffs sit as they did. Do not hang a wet pouch, blanket, or keychain from one loop. Skip the tumble dryer and the iron, and let the air finish the job.

Store it dry, away from humidity
In this weather, stitches can still feel cool after they look dry. Wait until the piece is dry all the way through, including the inside of a pouch or an amigurumi, before you put it away. A damp piece in a closed bag can pick up a musty smell.
Keep crochet in a dry cupboard or on a shelf that gets a little air, not in a steamy bathroom. A breathable bag or a drawer is a simple place. If the room feels very humid, a general tip is to finish drying in an air-conditioned room, then store the piece where it stays dry. A small moisture absorber in the cupboard is another general household tip, and it belongs there only after the piece is already dry.
